What is Kinesiology?
Kinesiology is a gentle, non-invasive alternative therapy that enhances the body’s innate ability to heal itself. It is based on the premise that many ailments, and even physical injuries, are facilitated by our ever-increasing stress load, as the latter creates energy imbalances in the body. These imbalances are identified through a technique called “muscle testing” and corrected using a variety of “balances” that work at the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels. Kinesiologists do not however diagnose or treat named diseases, nor do they prescribe any medication. They may recommend herbs, homeopathic remedies, essences or supplements, though.
What conditions can be treated?
Kinesiology can help your pet deal with a variety of issues, whether physical, mental, behavioural or emotional. These issues include a nutritional lack or excess, allergies, a negative emotional component, pain, the integration of muscle groups, mental and physical coordination, post-surgery recovery, etc. However, as previously mentioned, treating named diseases is outside the scope of Kinesiology. Kinesiology identifies and corrects imbalances in the flow of energy within the body, which helps the body heal itself. This means that kinesiologists will not work on a dog to cure its diabetes, for example, but will rather look for and correct underlying issues such as nutritional or emotional stress, a dysfunctional pancreas, etc.
What is a Kinesiology session like?
The kinesiologist will first ask for both the owner’s and the animal’s permission to work. The animal gives permission by making direct eye contact, licking its lips and accepting touch. Please note that if the animal gives signs of distress at that stage, it may not be possible to carry on with the session.
Once permission has been obtained, the kinesiologist takes a detailed history of the problem. He/she then carries out the muscle-testing part of the session on a surrogate, i.e. a person who “stands in” for the animal. This person is often the owner, as it is recommended that a strong bond exists between the animal and its surrogate. The relevant corrections are done on the animal’s body. The surrogate may feel extremely attuned to the animal’s emotions or reactions.
As a result, a Kinesiology session can be a beautiful way to enhance the pet-owner relationship.
Is it safe and will it hurt my pet?
Kinesiology is gentle, safe and non-invasive technique. Animals tend to appear extremely relaxed during a session, and many fall asleep a few minutes after the session has started. However, some corrections, like the stimulation of neuro-lymphatic points, may feel uncomfortable, depending on their location and on the issue at hand. If the animal shows discomfort, the kinesiologist will adjust the pressure accordingly. The detailed history, taken at the beginning of the session, will allow the kinesiologist to know which parts of the animal’s body should be touched with care.
